Hate it or love it Iggy Azalea is here to stay… And, she braided her hair. For the 2015 Grammy Awards, Pop Raptress, Iggy Azalea showed up with an interesting and I hate to say, uninspired, hair choice. But… what went wrong with Iggy’s braid?

Not that braids are in any way a new fashion trend. Braids including corn rows, dutch braids, french braids, and other braid varieties has been grabbing the attention of fashion houses and celebs alike, for years.  It’s all about how you style the look.

She donned a two big ol’ dutch braids. Her hair was parted down the middle of her head all the way to the nape of the neck. Her hair was dutch braided from the nape of her neck toward the her hairline. The braid was secured with an elastic and pinned across the front hair-line. I guess the look worked for her. I think there was room left for improvement.

In the look I shot above we style the model’s hair in a goddess braid. I roughly blow dried her hair using Schwarzkopf  Osis+ Grip Volumizing Mousse. Once her short (above the shoulder length hair) was had a ton of volume I added Schwarzkopf Dust It powder to add texture as I braid.

I began the dutch braid at the nape of the neck and loosely braid until I reach the back of the other ear. I then hold the braid in place with a duckbill clip. I begin to gently tug on the dutch braid in order to loosen and widen the braid in certain areas, this method is called pancaking. After getting the braid as wide as I wanted it to be, I continued the braid around the head. After reaching the end of the braid I bobby pinned the ends over the top of the beginning of the braid.

For the finished result I added more of the Dust It powder on the dutch braid and rub the palm of my hand along the braid.

I know Iggy tried to do something different with this look, but I think my Goddess braid was hotter mainly because it had better texture. You take away from this article; without texture, it’s just a big ol’ braid.

Have you rocked a large dutch braid at a formal event? What would you have done differently?

PS The hair stylist on this Iggy’s look was the world renowned, Ms. Ursula Stephan. Who knows why she choose not to make the dutch braid larger or more textured. It could have been at Iggy’s request, due to a lack of time, simply because she choose not to. Her celebrity clients are normally on the best hair list.
